According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the body has channels or meridians through which energy or Qi (pronounced chee) flows.
These channels are like (but not the same as) veins, arteries and nerves. Along the channels are acupuncture points which allow access into the body. Illness occurs when there is either too much or too little Qi in some part of the system. Too much Qi might give symptoms like pain, bloatedness or stress, while too little might result in tiredness, depression, diarrhoea etc. The acupuncturist re-distributes the levels of Qi in various parts of the body through the use of fine needles. This can relieve symptoms and promote recovery.
