Deirdre is a play therapist and developmental psychologist who has studied child development for over 15 years and who has worked with children in a therapeutic capacity since 2015. She is a certified play therapist and member of Play Therapy Ireland and is passionate about providing children with opportunities to express themselves through play. She provides a play therapy service to children aged 4-12 and also works with Children in Hospital Ireland to promote play in hospital settings.
She has a postgraduate certificate and diploma in therapeutic play skills accredited by NUI Galway and delivered by the Academy of Play and Child Psychotherapy and is working towards accreditation. She also has a BA and PhD in Psychology and her research area focused on children’s self-esteem and body image.
She has also worked with children and young people in a number of other roles including as a Brownie leader, as an instructor for the Centre for Talented Youth, as a researcher evaluating school-based programmes, and as a children’s author doing readings and workshops in schools and libraries.
An experienced educator, researcher and public speaker, Deirdre has taught psychology modules in All Hallows College, Dublin City University and University College Dublin. She has also taught modules on early childhood care and education in the National College of Ireland and has supervised research projects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is also regularly asked to contribute to discussions on mental health and body image by a range of local and national media outlets.
